The following is a list of the terminology used to specify the requirements for manufacture of our products, with a meaning and broad description of the words used. The products being cut sets, books, pads, A4 laser sheets and folded leaflets. This information will help you as a guide and source of reference when specifying enquiries and requesting prices for our products.
CUT SETS
Multipart forms made up of two or more sheets of material supplied loose as individual sets or made up collectively into books or pads of a specified amount of sets.
BOOKS
A specified amount of cut sets or sheets wire stitched together generally within a perforated stub to a strawboard back for extra rigidity.
PADS
A specified amount of cut sets or sheets glued together on one particular edge, generally with a strawboard back for rigidity.
FOLDED LEAFLETS
Printed leaflets up to four spot colours any combination of face and reverse folded to a variety of configurations.
SIZE
Size to be specified with the depth of the form first followed by the width preferably in millimetres, e.g. an A4 Portrait size form being 11 ¾” deep and 8 ¼” wide should be specified as 297 x 210 mm.
Always specify overall size including any stub.
SIZE CONVERSION
To convert inches to millimetres, multiply the number of inches by 25.4 mm e.g. 11.75x25.4=297mm.
TEAR OUT SIZE
This is the finished size of the sheet after the sheet has been torn away from any stub.
PORTRAIT
When the depth is longer than the width.
e.g. A4 Portrait is 297 x 210 mm.
LANDSCAPE
When the depth is shorter than the width.
e.g. A4 Landscape is 210 x 297 mm.
LONG GRAIN
Where the grain direction of the paper runs parallel to the long edge of the sheet.
GENERAL MATERIALS
NCR: Carbonless paper, strictly translated as No Carbon Required.
PENCIL CARBON: Loose carbon placed between sheets of bank or bond material in multipart sets to facilitate copyability.
CONSTAT
Paper with no coating or self copying capabilities generally.
BANK/BOND/BOARD
Defined more specifically with respect to weight.
BANK: 50 gsm
BOND: 60 gsm to 135 gsm
BOARD: 145 gsm to 190 gsm
LASER BOND: A quality of paper compatible for lasers but not guaranteed.
LASER PRE-PRINT: A quality of paper guaranteed for use in laser printers when processed reel to sheet.
G.S.M.: Grammage or weight of material strictly translated as grams per square metre.
DESENSITISING
Ink used to prevent copying between NCR papers.
DROP OUT INK
Ink colours which when printed will not photocopy.
SPOT CARBON
A cold carbonising ink in small patches to allow crash numbering between bank and bond sheets or non-carbonless sets.
LASER INKS
Laser quality ink which is guaranteed to withstand the heat generated within a laser printer without breaking down.
PRINTING ON FACE
Printing on the front of any sheet.
REVERSE PRINTING
Printing on the back of any sheet.
PRINT BLEED
Where any printed image runs off the edge of the sheet.
TIP GLUE
Where multipart forms are glued together along an edge to form a set.
STUB GLUE
Where multipart forms are spot glued together generally within a perforated stub.
WIRE STITCHED
A means of fixing an amount of sets or sheets together with wire stitches, generally within a perforated stub.
PADDING
A means of fixing an amount of sets or sheets together with glue along any edge, generally to a strawboard back.
COVER
A protective sheet of generally heavier weight board e.g. 180 gsm and stitched together along with sets or sheets to act as the face of a book.
DRAWN ON COVER
A protective sheet of generally heavier weight board e.g. 180 gsm. glued to the reverse of a strawboard back and folded over to act as the lace of a pad.
WRAPAROUND WRITING SHIELD
A protective sheet of generally heavier weight board e.g. 270 gsm. glued to the reverse of a strawboard back of books or pads and folded over to be inserted between individual sets within the book or pad, acting as a pressure sensitive barrier to prevent copying of information between more than one set.
LOOSE BOARD WRITING SHIELD
A piece of heavy weight board supplied loose with a book or pad to be inserted between individual sets to prevent copying of information between more than one set.
TAPED SPINE
A cloth strip of tape fixed along the stub edge of a book to cover the wire stitches within the stub.
MULL SPINE
A reinforcing gauze type cloth which is glued along the edge of a pad, gives more strength of bond between the sets and boards.
BANDING
A means of wrapping together a specific amount of sets or sheets.
CONSECUTIVE
Numbers follow on from each other on individual sets or sheets.
SKIP NUMBERING
Numbers which follow on from each other on the same sheet e.g. Skip 4 means that the numbers 1 to 4 appear on the same set then the numbers 5 to 8 appear on the following set.
PREFIX
One or more alphabet letters which appear before or in front of a number.
SUFFIX
One or more alphabet letters which appear after a number.
CRASH NUMBERING
Numbering which is printed on the top sheet of a multipart set but which is transferred to the other parts of the set by using pressure and the copying characteristics of the paper.
LINEAR/DOWN PERF
Position to be specified as a distance from the left edge of the form.
CROSS PERF
Position to be specified as a distance from the head of the form.
STOP/SKIP PERF
Where the perforation only runs part way along the sheet, it does not run off two edges.
MICRO PERF
A perforation made up of very small cuts, giving the appearance of a cleaner edge to the sheet after tearing.
FILE HOLES
To be specified with the number of holes followed by the size of hole then the distance the holes are apart and on which edge they appear.
e.g. standard ring binder file holes are 1/4" (6mm) in diameter 3 1/8" (8cm) apart on the left hand side of a sheet, generally specified as 2 holes 6mm at 8cc at left.
